Here is my story ….
MIAMI UNIVERSITY,OHIO– the college years
Earned my MS in Exercise Science
Athletic Scholarship, Men’s Division One Ice Hockey, when you are born in Canada, you skate home from the hospital, and my Dad played Pro hockey in the NHL, it’s in the family. Athletics taught me drive, determination, focus, and discipline.
Discovered my love of learning and teaching, worked as a student teacher, completed a thesis, and earned my Masters Degree. I almost went on to get my PHD and become a college professor – Nerd alert!
GOT MARRIED TO MY LOVELY WIFE CHANDA, we have been married 23 years now and have two girls 10 years old and 12 years old (a dog, a bunny, two cats and eight chickens ).
“You can’t be afraid to fail. It’s the only way you succeed. You’re not gonna succeed every time and I know that.” Lebron James, Professional Basketball Player.
PROFESSIONAL ICE HOCKEY PLAYER -Fulfilled my childhood dream of playing pro hockey; Chanda and I lived outside Zurich, Switzerland and I played pro ice hockey for three years. It was an amazing experience to work and travel in Europe, played on the same team as my brother, how cool is that!
“I have always said that everyone is in sales. Maybe you don’t hold the title of salesperson, but if the business you are in requires you to deal with people, you my friend are in sales.” Zig Ziglar, Inc.com Top 10 Best Sales People Ever.
PHARMACEUTICAL SALES REPRESENTATIVE – worked for the Fortune 100 company Pfizer in sales for 10 years. Got promoted twice and was groomed for management training and won multiple sales awards. This is where I was taught high-level sales skills and put them into good practice getting past gate keepers, finding key doctors and selling. I learned how to cold call in person and find new customers, manage accounts, and sell against my competitors.
But the industry changed and the earning potential seemed capped and I was micro managed by higher ups, I didn’t feel like I was bringing any value to anybody. I was offered a new and interesting opportunity.
“Never say never, because limits, like fears are just an illusion.” Michael Jordan, Professional Basketball Player
100% SALES COMMISSION JOB -with $7,000 in the bank and two young toddlers at home, I traded in my white collar salary-plus- commission job for a riskier job in Oilfield Sales; but without risk there is no reward. And the financial reward was more than I ever thought possible. I was making a healthy six figure income in the first year, and it only got healthier as I consistently performed, coming in second or third repeatedly in monthly sales .
I learned how to overcome fear, run a small business and build up my own customer base from nothing, manufacture and sell a product, hone my sales skills to a higher level using cold calling over the phone, cold emailing and negotiation skills. This experience was perfect for learning how to start a small business, I think it is valuable for every entrepreneur to work for a small business first.
But money isn’t the only goal or measure of success.
“I knew that if I failed, I wouldn’t regret that, but I knew the one thing I might regret is not trying.” Jeff Bezos, Amazon Founder, CEO
ENTREPRENEUR , CHAPTER 1 – I had a strong desire to combine my skills, giftings, and passion into a job of my own. So, we sold our $850,000 dream house along with the BMW, traded it for a Honda CRV, and our family moved out of the big city rat race to a small mountain town where we pursued our first entrepreneurial endeavor: Plein-Air Oil Painting and selling in galleries, festivals, shows as well as online.
One reason I gave up a six figure income to start my own business is that I didn’t want to live with regret of not trying. I was successfully selling paintings, but the Oilfield Sales company called and asked me back since they had lost two salesmen, the money was too tempting and they caught me at a low point, so I opened my own office up and went back to my sales job.
My dream of one day waking up and looking forward to going to work, and owning a business was still very much alive in my heart. However, this experience taught me a great deal and I will build on it, learn from it and have a better business because of it.
“A person who never made a mistake, never tried anything new.” Albert Einstein, Physicist, Inventor
ENTREPRENEUR , CHAPTER 2 – The ComfyStool, I saw an unmet need and problem in the portable camping stool market and decided to create a solution carving out my own niche. I discovered this problem while outdoor oil painting on stools that killed my back. This was an excellent experience for me as an entrepreneur because I had to figure my way through all the facets of creating a product and a business around it from scratch.
I designed a cool product that solved a problem in a mass market, secured manufacturing and put a marketing and sales plan into place. I learned how to do product market research, proof of concept or idea validation, prototyping, engineering and securing overseas manufacturing. In fact this is going great and still in process today as we work on easuccess and it’s my goal to share this journey with other entrepreneurs and encourage them as well.
“Yes, I’ve had to overcome a lot of adversity, but so does every creative person who wants their ideas to see the light of day.” Jon Morrow, CEO of Smartblogger, paralyzed from the neck down
